When searching for a location from which to paint, I’m usually on the hunt for boulders and rocks in the sea, with the tide causing some movement and large waves.
I assess the scene for interesting light – coming through the waves, for example, as well as other activity in the foam. I’m looking for movement and energy in the waves and sea.
Striking light is possible even in stormy weather. My favourite locations are on the west coast of Ireland, where the Atlantic can throw up wonderful seas against the rocks. Anglesey is another of my favourite areas in which to paint.
